about me - Joel Rhymer

"If I could take photographs like these, I’d give up painting. You capture in one frame everything I wish I could show on a canvas."

"I can’t look for too long. Your photos make me think too much."

I call this "unintentional photography."

Much of what I photograph is unplanned, and I often wait for moments to come to me. And rather than race to get the next shot up on social media, or sell a commercial package to promote a lifestyle image, I often sit with my photographs - sometimes for long periods of time - waiting to see what gets my attention and rises to the forefront. New interpretations can appear. What is meaningful today may not have been evident at one time. Original intentions may fade.

A love for my subjects is what connects my photos, and they're not limited to one genre or style. They're a combination of storytelling, candid street shots, nature, art, and a little journalism. There's a human element to what I try to express, and sometimes that requires the viewer to look deeply. I'm moved by the feeling of surprise, or an emotion unexpected.  Spend some time poring over what I offer here. Maybe you'll find something that is comforting and comfortable, worth your while. And, please don't think I'm dissing social media and commercial photography. I love the chaos and energy they represent, and I spend a great deal of time there.

I've always used photography for both work and fun, mostly donating my time and photographs to numerous organizations over the years. Once in a while, I'll sell a print in a gallery or the rights to a picture. My photos have been published widely on line, in magazines, newspapers, web pages, museum displays, and other formats.

The photos featured here are mostly selected from my personal collection created during travels or close to home in Freedom, NH. Some of them are available for sale as gallery quality prints. Prices vary with size, and not all photographs you see here are available. Contact me if you have questions. Prints are made to order, signed, and shipped to you.
